Eastover Elementary School

Save

Built by the WPA in 1935, Eastover long served its affluent neighborhood and the surrounding area. Additions were made in 1940, 1949, 1953 and 1972, which filled its small site. By the year 2000, the buildings were really showing their age. The project scope called for the renovation of the entire campus to bring it up to current standards while retaining the look and feel of the original buildings.

An awkwardly placed and poorly built 1953 classroom wing was replaced by a new two story wing that mimics the proportion and details of the original building. A landscaped courtyard was developed between the new and existing buildings for outdoor learning. The 1949 classroom wing was converted into a new Media Center with ample windows replacing a small, windowless library. Because of the extent of the work and the tight site, the school was relocated to another campus for one school year. With its completion, the school saw a significant number of neighborhood families returning to the new Eastover from private schools.
