Rambutan Thai
An over-scaled, golden Buddha head watches over the proceedings at this relatively new Thai restaurant located in a nondescript, Silverlake corner mall. The atmosphere is romantically lush and dimly lit, and features a full soju bar and a menu with enough twists on traditional Thai fare to keep the hip and knowing Silverlake crowd happy and coming back for more.

Cinnabar
Hidden among a row of car dealerships on colorless Brand Blvd., the stylish and very red Cinnabar is an unexpected find. And the food is always excellent.

Apartment 3
If there’s no one on the sidewalk below selling lemonade, look for the hand-painted sign leading you upstairs to Apartment 3. Make yourself at home in this cozy boutique, exploring the hospitable owner’s latest finds in ‘new’ and ‘not so new’ women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. A smartly edited collection of vintage mingles with up-and-coming local and independent designers. Take in some fresh air while browsing on the terrace. And don’t forget to dig through the closet – you might just uncover your new favorite dress.

HK Supermarket / California Market / Plaza Market
There are three major Korean grocery stores along Western Avenue that can guide you through the heart of Koreatown. Traveling south on Western, you will hit HK Supermarket, which is on 1st and Western. This market has an old-school vendor out front selling rice cakes (“ppong-ti-gi”) fresh daily. The next market is the California Market on 5th and Western – outside the entrance there is a truck that sells “ho-dok” – small pancakes with sweet syrup inside – best when piping hot. Finally, at 9th and Western is the Plaza Market, located inside a mall structure – this is a great place to find excellent fresh fruit and the standard Korean market fare. If you use these markets as touch points, you can easily find restaurants and shops to explore.
