Teaching Urban Retail At Harvard GSD

Terry Shook, FAIA, along with Robert J. Gibbs, AICP, ASLA, Stefanos Polyzoides (of the acclaimed architectural and urbanist firm of Moule & Polyzoides), Yaromir Steiner (the developer of Easton Town Center and many other complex mixed-use projects), Galina Tachieva (Managing Partner and Director of Town Planning at Duany Plater Zyberk) and Paco Underhill (one of the world’s foremost researchers of consumer behavior / founder and CEO of the market research and consulting company Envirosell, Inc.) will be at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design to teach a 3-day course that includes presentations and interactive discussions offering a rich cross section of the planning practices and opportunities of our time. This fast paced program – ideal for developers, planners, investors, retailers, architects, and public officials – will demonstrate how proven principles of retail development can be combined with the best practices of New Urbanism, Smart Growth and architectural design to create successful and competitive mixed-use urban commercial centers. The program will cover many topics, among them the required market demographics for various retailers, restaurants and shopping center typologies including convenience centers, neighborhood centers, power centers, regional malls, and lifestyle centers. The impact of consumer psychographics and techniques for creating place-based brands will also be presented. Paco will share his perspective regarding emerging markets from around the world – “The Cutting Edge of 21st Century Retail.”
